Designed by Colonial Architect Charles Tiffin, the house is a rare surviving example of classical revival architecture adapted for the Australian climate.For nearly fifty years, Old Government House was the hub of colonial life in Brisbane, hosting countless balls, receptions, and important political events. Key decisions that shaped Queensland's early development were made within its walls. In 1910, the building transitioned to become the inaugural home of the University of Queensland.
