    Old Government House is located in Brisbane's CBD, adjacent to the City Botanic Gardens, making it easily accessible on foot. From the Queen Street Mall, walk along George Street towards the Botanic Gardens. The House will be on your left, within the QUT Gardens Point campus. The walk is approximately 10 minutes.

  • Public Transport

    QUT Gardens Point is well-serviced by public transport. Several bus routes stop near Old Government House, including routes 124, 175, 215 and 227. Check the Translink Journey Planner for the best route from your location. Alight at a stop on Alice or George Street and walk a short distance to the House. As of August 2024, all Translink public transport fares are a flat rate of $0.50 per journey.

    A taxi or ride-share to Old Government House is a convenient option. A taxi drop-off zone is located outside Parliament House on George Street, about a 5-minute walk from the House. Completed in 1862, it served as both the private residence and official state office for the colony's first eleven governors. Designed by Colonial Architect Charles Tiffin, the house is a rare surviving example of classical revival architecture adapted for the Australian climate.For nearly fifty years, Old Government House was the hub of colonial life in Brisbane, hosting countless balls, receptions, and important political events. Key decisions that shaped Queensland's early development were made within its walls. In 1910, the building transitioned to become the inaugural home of the University of Queensland. Later, from 1972 to 2002, it housed the National Trust of Queensland.Reopened in 2009 as a museum, Old Government House now offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore Queensland's past. Interactive exhibits tell the story of the house and the people who lived and worked there. The William Robinson Gallery, located within the house, showcases the works of the renowned Australian artist.
