Jarod The Big Whale: A Pialba Icon

Jarod The Big Whale, often referred to as Nala by locals, is a captivating sculpture located in Pialba, a coastal town within Hervey Bay, Queensland. This impressive artwork serves as a tribute to the humpback whales that migrate to the protected waters of Hervey Bay each year. The sculpture, standing at 8.3 meters tall and spanning 14.8 meters from flipper to flipper, was created by artist Chris Calcutt, with timber carving by Ross Bradbury and Glen Waterman. Constructed from 9 tonnes of steel framework, 3.5 tonnes of stainless steel, and 9.5 tonnes of timber, the sculpture is a dedication to Nala, a female humpback whale first spotted in Hervey Bay in 1992. Nala is easily recognized by the unique patterns on her fluke and has been returning to the bay with her calves. The sculpture was erected in August 2012 and quickly became a local landmark. Located on the corner of Main Street and Old Maryborough Road, Jarod The Big Whale provides an excellent photo opportunity for tourists and locals alike. The surrounding area is ideal for leisurely walks and picnics, allowing visitors to soak in the coastal views. The site also acts as a starting point for exploring other attractions in Pialba and Hervey Bay.
