Discover more about Lake McKenzie

Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is one of K'gari's (Fraser Island) most iconic and beautiful destinations. This perched lake, located in the Great Sandy National Park, is a true natural wonder. Unlike most lakes, Lake McKenzie is not fed by any streams or rivers; it is filled only with rainwater. The water filters through the surrounding sand, resulting in its remarkable clarity and purity. The lake's water is so pure that it can support very little life. The lake's striking beauty comes from the contrast between the turquoise-blue water and the dazzling white silica sand that makes up its beach. The sand is incredibly soft and composed of nearly pure silica. Visitors enjoy swimming in the clear, refreshing water and relaxing on the sandy shores. The lake is approximately 1,200 meters long and up to 930 meters wide, covering about 150 hectares. Lake McKenzie also has a rich history. During World War II, a military training camp was established near the lake in March 1944, but it closed later that year. More recently, it served as a location for the reality TV show, The Amazing Race Australia 2. The Butchulla people, the traditional owners of K'gari, believe the lake's waters have healing properties and consider it a sacred site. Today, Lake McKenzie is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, and camping. The area is equipped with picnic areas, toilets, and cold showers. The lake is accessible by 4WD vehicles via inland tracks from Eurong or Kingfisher Bay.
