4WD Vehicle
South Ngkala Rocks is best accessed with a 4WD vehicle due to the sandy and unsealed roads on K'gari (Fraser Island). From the ferry landing at River Heads or Kingfisher Bay, drive towards the eastern side of the island, following signs for Eastern Beach. Continue until you reach the intersection for South Ngkala Rocks, following the signs. Be prepared for driving in sandy conditions. Vehicle access permits are required and can be purchased online. Note: As of June 2025, the South Ngkala Rocks vehicle bypass is closed. Check current park alerts for updated information. Typical Costs: * Vehicle access permit: Approximately AUD 54.55. * Ferry from River Heads (return for 4WD): Approximately AUD 160.
