Discover more about Urangan Pier (middle)

Urangan Pier, located in Hervey Bay, Queensland, is a testament to the region's rich history and natural beauty. Built between 1913 and 1917, this pier initially served as a vital deep-water, cargo-handling facility, facilitating the export of sugar, timber, and coal. The pier was connected to the mainland by an extension of the railway line from Pialba, enabling seamless transfer of goods between rail and ships. Originally stretching 1,107 meters (3,632 feet), the pier played a crucial role in the region's economic development. However, with the construction of the Bundaberg Port and changes in trade, the pier's commercial activities gradually declined. In 1985, the pier was closed for commercial use, and a 239-meter section was demolished. Public outcry led to the preservation of 868 meters of the pier, which was then transferred to the Hervey Bay City Council (now Fraser Coast Regional Council). Restoration efforts in 1999 and 2009 saw the pier revitalized with steel pylons replacing the original timber, ensuring its longevity. Today, Urangan Pier stands as a beloved landmark, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Hervey Bay's stunning coastal scenery. A stroll along the pier provides spectacular views of Hervey Bay, with opportunities to spot schools of fish, stingrays, and even dolphins. Fishing is a popular activity, with whiting being a sought-after catch. The pier precinct also features boutique shops, alfresco dining, and picnic areas, making it a perfect destination for a day out.
