History of Broadbeach

Country and Coastal Landscape

Broadbeach lies on the traditional lands associated with the Kombumerri people, part of the Yugambeh language region. Before urban development, the coastal landscape consisted of beach, dunes, wetlands and waterways supporting movement, food gathering and cultural activity. The neighbourhood’s modern name is descriptive: it refers to the broad beach that became its defining physical feature. As elsewhere along the Gold Coast, roads, land subdivision and tourism gradually transformed the coastal environment, but the relationship between the ocean, open sand and inland waterways remains central to Broadbeach’s identity.

The Broadbeach Estate

European settlement brought pastoral use, timber getting and small-scale farming to parts of the wider coastal region before the area was subdivided for residential and holiday development. Broadbeach emerged as a named estate and seaside locality as the Gold Coast’s beaches began attracting visitors in the early twentieth century. Its growth was encouraged by road improvements and the expanding reputation of the coast as a resort destination. Early development was comparatively low-rise, with houses, guest accommodation and small commercial premises arranged around the beach and the routes linking coastal settlements.

Resort Development and High-Rise Growth

After the Second World War, improved roads, private-car tourism and the expansion of leisure travel accelerated Broadbeach’s transformation. Motels, holiday apartments, shops and entertainment venues appeared along the coastal strip, followed by taller residential and hotel buildings as development intensified from the 1960s onwards. The opening of the complex now known as The Star Gold Coast in 1985 added a major entertainment anchor. Broadbeach’s built character consequently shifted from a modest seaside settlement towards a dense resort precinct, a pattern that reshaped much of the Gold Coast.

Events, Transit and Urban Renewal

Broadbeach gained a stronger role in the city’s cultural and business life with the opening of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in 2004 and the continued use of Kurrawa Park for large public events. The G:link light rail reached Broadbeach in 2014, improving connections with Surfers Paradise, Southport and other coastal districts. Subsequent redevelopment has added apartment buildings, landscaped public spaces and contemporary dining areas, while the beach, surf club and park continue to provide the older recreational framework around which the neighbourhood developed.
