Kaiela Arts, situated in Shepparton on the traditional lands of the Yorta Yorta Nation, is a vibrant hub dedicated to Aboriginal art and culture. Established in 2006, the center provides a platform for local Aboriginal artists to showcase their work and preserve their cultural heritage. It stands as one of only two Aboriginal Art Centres in Victoria.Kaiela Arts promotes the traditional linear and X-ray styles of the South Eastern Aboriginal people, referencing thousands of years of cultural practice. Artists at Kaiela Arts draw inspiration from their surroundings and the rich traditions of Yorta Yorta cultural practices. Their art often depicts the flora, fauna, and waterways of their traditional territory, as well as stories of the Dreamtime.Visitors can view and purchase authentic Aboriginal art, including paintings, weavings, and contemporary expressions of traditional styles. The center also hosts regular exhibitions and events throughout the year, providing a space for the community to connect with culture through the arts. Kaiela Arts plays a vital role in strengthening the community by sharing culture, learning from the past, and empowering future generations.The art center is located on the ground floor of the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM). The space includes a gallery and a studio where artists explore traditional and contemporary techniques.
