Sheoak Falls: A Tranquil Oasis on the Great Ocean Road

Sheoak Falls offers a tranquil escape into nature, easily accessible from the iconic Great Ocean Road. Located a short 10-minute drive from Lorne, within the Great Otway National Park, the falls provide a serene break with the sounds of cascading water and the surrounding rainforest. The falls themselves are a gentle cascade, with Sheoak Creek tumbling 15 meters over rocky outcrops into a calm pool below. The area is surrounded by lush greenery, including coastal woodland, ferns, and mossy rocks, creating a peaceful retreat. The soft rustle of the creek and calls of native birds add to the natural symphony. After rainfall, the falls come alive with a stronger water flow, enhancing their beauty. The walk to Sheoak Falls is a highlight, with the 1.2km return track starting from the Sheoak Falls Carpark and winding through a mix of coastal woodland and rainforest. The well-formed track includes some steep steps and uneven paths, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Along the way, you'll cross Sheoak Creek and may spot native wildlife. For a longer hike, continue past the falls to Swallow Cave, home to nesting Tree Martins during spring, summer, and autumn. Alternatively, a more challenging 3.6km trail (one way) connects Sheoak Falls to Sheoak Picnic Area, which has better facilities.
