The bay was named in the early 19th century by French explorer Nicolas Baudin. The beach stretches six kilometers in a U-shape, boasting soft, golden sands and crystal-clear waters, creating an idyllic setting for sunbathing, leisurely strolls, and family outings. The western end of the beach, near the jetty, is known for its gentle waves, making it ideal for swimming and wading. The bay is also famous for its cray fishing industry, where you can observe boats returning to the jetty with their fresh catches. Picnic and barbeque areas are available for public use near the jetty. Beyond the beach, visitors can explore the nearby Vivonne Bay Conservation Park, an 887-hectare nature reserve. Little Sahara, home to the island's only sand dunes, offers hiking, quad biking, and sandboarding opportunities. Seal Bay Conservation Park, located to the east, is home to Australia's third-largest sea lion colony.
