Wyperfeld National Park, located in the Mallee district of north-western Victoria, is a sprawling conservation area encompassing 357,017 hectares. Proclaimed a national park in 1921, it protects a diverse range of Mallee ecosystems. These include woodland, heathland, and a chain of lake beds connected by Outlet Creek. The park's name is believed to be of German origin, reflecting the area's settlement history.Wyperfeld offers a unique experience of the Australian outback, with landscapes ranging from the Big Desert country in the west to Mallee scrub in the east, and floodplains and sand dunes in the north. The park is renowned for its diverse birdlife, including the Malleefowl, a remarkable mound-building bird. Other wildlife includes various mammals and reptiles, alongside a stunning array of wildflowers that bloom in spring.Visitors can explore the park through a network of walking trails and 4WD tracks. Camping is available at several campgrounds, including Wonga, Casuarina and Snowdrift, with basic facilities provided. Wonga Campground features a visitor information centre with displays on the park's natural and cultural history. Scenic drives, such as the James Barrett Nature Drive, offer accessible exploration of the park's diverse landscapes. For the adventurous, remote 4WD tracks provide a challenging experience, with caution advised due to deep sand and narrow conditions.The park's lakes occasionally fill from the Wimmera River via Outlet Creek, creating a haven for waterbirds and allowing river red gums to regenerate. However, these events have become less frequent due to agricultural irrigation. Wyperfeld's history includes occupation by the Wotjobaluk people, with scarred trees and other cultural sites found within the park. European settlers initially avoided the area due to infertile soils, contributing to the preservation of its native flora and fauna.
