Discover more about Wingham Brush Nature Reserve

Wingham Brush Nature Reserve protects one of the few remaining examples of subtropical lowland rainforest in the Manning Valley. This 8-hectare reserve, nestled beside the Manning River near Taree, offers visitors a tranquil escape into a world of towering fig trees and diverse wildlife. Historically, the area was part of the traditional lands of the Biripi people, who used it for gathering food, medicinal plants, and social gatherings. The name 'Wingan,' in the local Aboriginal language, means 'where bats come to drink'. European settlement led to selective logging, particularly of red cedar, but in 1909, the area became a reserve. By the 1980s, the rainforest was heavily infested with weeds, threatening its survival. A dedicated regeneration team implemented what is now known as 'The Wingham Brush method,' an internationally recognized technique, to restore the rainforest to its natural state. Wander along the wheelchair-accessible boardwalk and easy walking tracks to discover the vibrant life under the canopy. Marvel at the gigantic Moreton Bay figs, giant stinging trees, and a variety of vines. The reserve boasts at least 195 species of native plants, including 76 species of trees and 32 different vines. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting species like the osprey, green catbird, and wompoo fruit-dove. Wingham Brush is also a significant roosting and maternity site for the vulnerable grey-headed flying fox. These fascinating creatures roost by day and fly out at night to feed, guided by their excellent eyesight and sense of smell. Visitors can witness the spectacular sight of thousands of flying foxes taking to the sky at sunset.
