Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start from your location in Hohe Tauern and navigate towards the Umbaltal Valley. The most common route is to take the B108 road towards Matrei in Osttirol. After approximately 12 km, turn onto the L24 road, which will lead you into the Umbaltal Valley. Follow this road for about 8 km until you reach the Umbaltal Waterfall parking area. There is a small fee for parking, so be prepared for that.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, take a bus from Matrei in Osttirol to the Umbaltal Valley. Buses run regularly, and you can catch the bus from the main station in Matrei. The ride takes about 30 minutes. Once you arrive at the Umbaltal stop, follow the signs to the waterfall, which is about a 20-minute walk from the bus stop. Check local schedules for bus timings to ensure a smooth journey.
Hiking
For those who enjoy hiking, you can also start from the Umbaltal Valley trailhead, which is accessible from the parking area mentioned earlier. There are well-marked trails leading to the waterfall, and the hike will take approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on your pace. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and carry water, as the trails can be steep in some sections.
