If you are traveling by car from the central area of Hohe Tauern, head towards the B100 road. Follow the B100 north for approximately 14 kilometers. Look for signs indicating the direction towards 'Alter Tauern' as you approach the small town of Matrei in Osttirol. Once you reach Matrei, follow the signs towards the 'Großglockner' and 'Alter Tauern'. You will need to continue on the L24 for about 10 kilometers. Ensure to have a map or GPS device handy, as the roads can be narrow and winding. There is no parking directly at the peak, so look for designated parking areas near the trailheads.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, start by taking a train from your location in Hohe Tauern to Matrei in Osttirol. Trains run regularly, but check the schedule in advance for exact times. Upon arriving at Matrei train station, you can take a local bus that heads toward 'Alter Tauern'. The bus ride will take about 30 minutes and drops you off at a designated stop near the hiking trails leading up to Alter Tauern. Hiking
