Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Matrei in Osttirol, which is one of the main gateways to the Hohe Tauern National Park. From Matrei, take the B108 road towards Kals am Großglockner. Continue on this road for about 14 km until you reach the junction for Umbaltal. Turn left onto the Umbaltal road (signposted), which leads into the Umbaltal Valley. Drive along this road for approximately 7 km; you will reach a parking area near the Umbaltal Waterfall. Parking may incur a fee, typically around €5 for a day.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Matrei in Osttirol to Kals am Großglockner. The bus service is operated by the regional public transport company and runs several times a day. You can check the schedule in advance. Once you arrive in Kals, you’ll need to transfer to a local taxi service or take a shuttle bus if available, which can take you to the Umbaltal Valley. Note that taxi fares can vary, so it’s advisable to confirm the price with the driver before starting your journey.
Hiking
If you are already in the vicinity and prefer to hike, you can start from the parking area at the end of the Umbaltal road. The hike to the Umbaltal Waterfall is relatively easy and takes about 30-45 minutes. Follow the marked trail that leads through beautiful alpine scenery. Ensure that you wear appropriate footwear and bring water, as the trail can be rocky in some areas.
