Grabensee: A Tranquil Lake in Salzburg's Lake District

Grabensee, nestled in the Salzburger Seenland (Salzburg Lake District), is a serene and picturesque lake that invites visitors to immerse themselves in nature's tranquility. As the smallest of the three Trumer Lakes, along with Mattsee and Obertrumersee, Grabensee boasts a unique charm with its swampy surroundings and protected nature reserve. Formed after the last Ice Age, the lake is fed and drained by the Mattig creek, contributing to its rich biodiversity.Located on the border of Salzburg and Upper Austria, Grabensee is renowned for its warm waters, reaching up to 30°C (86°F) in the summer, making it ideal for swimming. Motor vehicles and boating are prohibited to preserve the lake's pristine environment. The community of Perwang operates a lido (Strandbad), offering the primary access point for swimming with basic amenities like a grassy area, a small wharf, and a raft.The area around Grabensee is ideal for leisurely hikes and walks. The circular trail around the lake is approximately 8 kilometers long and takes about 2.5 hours to complete, offering stunning lake views and opportunities for birdwatching. The trail passes by the Gnadenbründl spring, believed to have healing properties, and the Keltenschanze, an ancient Celtic site.
