Discover more about Capuchin Church, llc

The Capuchin Church, or Kapuzinerkirche, is located on Neuer Markt in Vienna's city center. Officially named the Church of St. Mary of the Angels, it offers visitors a unique blend of spiritual sanctuary and historical significance. Founded in 1617 by Anna of Tyrol and Emperor Matthias, its construction was completed in 1632. The church reflects the Capuchin order's emphasis on simplicity, with a design that contrasts the city's more opulent architecture. The church's main draw is the Imperial Crypt (Kaisergruft), also known as the Capuchin Crypt, located beneath the church. Since 1633, it has served as the primary burial site for the Habsburg dynasty. The crypt contains the remains of 12 emperors and 19 empresses, including notable figures like Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph I, and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi). The sarcophagi range from simple to elaborately decorated, reflecting different periods and artistic styles. The church itself is a single-nave hall with barrel vaults. Renovations occurred over the years, with a complete renovation in 2016. Inside, visitors can see the Pietà Chapel and the Imperial Chapel, as well as memorials to those who died in World War I. The church provides a serene escape from the city's bustle, inviting contemplation and reflection.
