Discover more about Klosterneuburg Monastery

Klosterneuburg Monastery, perched on a hill overlooking the Danube River, is a captivating blend of history, art, and viticulture. Founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III and his wife Agnes, legend says the location was chosen where Leopold found Agnes's veil, which had been carried away by the wind. The monastery has evolved over centuries, showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architectural styles. The abbey church, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, was consecrated in 1136 and later remodeled in the Baroque style. The impressive complex largely took shape between 1730 and 1834, though its foundations, including a castle tower and Gothic chapel, date back to the 12th century. Emperor Charles VI envisioned Klosterneuburg as Austria's Escorial, a spiritual and secular center. Inside, visitors can marvel at the medieval Verdun Altar, crafted in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun, and the Austrian Archducal Hat, also known as the Holy Crown of Austria. The monastery's treasury displays priceless relics, ornate chalices, and ancient manuscripts. The abbey also boasts a library with 30,000 volumes and numerous manuscripts. Klosterneuburg's rich history extends to viticulture, with its winery being the oldest in Austria. Wine has been produced here since the monastery's consecration in 1136. Visitors can explore the Baroque wine cellar and sample exquisite wines. The monastery also houses a Gallery of Modern Art, exhibiting modern sacred art. Today, the Augustinian canons continue their pastoral, scientific, cultural, and economic roles, maintaining the abbey's legacy.
