    Discover more about Österreichische Postsparkasse

The Österreichische Postsparkasse, located on Georg-Coch-Platz in Vienna's Innere Stadt, is an architectural gem designed by Otto Wagner. Constructed between 1904 and 1912, it stands as a key example of Viennese Jugendstil and a turning point in modern architecture. Wagner's design broke from traditional styles, emphasizing functionality and incorporating new materials like reinforced concrete, marble, aluminum, and glass. The building was commissioned by the Austrian Postal Savings Bank, which sought a headquarters that reflected its modern procedures. Wagner's design achieved this with its clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and emphasis on natural light. The facade is clad in square marble slabs attached with aluminum rivets, creating a strong, lockbox-like appearance. Inside, the grand Kassenhalle (main banking hall) is illuminated by a frosted glass skylight and features a glass-tiled floor that allows light to reach the lower levels. Today, the Österreichische Postsparkasse houses the BAWAG P.S.K. bank and academic institutions, including the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Visitors can explore the building's architectural features, including the Kassenhalle, which retains its original 1906 design. The building also hosts temporary exhibitions on design and a video section on its history. The Kassenhalle also features Café Exchange, where visitors can relax and enjoy the unique atmosphere.
