These writings document three millennia of Egyptian history, from 1500 BCE to 1500 CE, encompassing ancient Egypt, Hellenistic Egypt, Roman Egypt, and Egypt during Muslim rule.Visitors can admire the oldest object in the Austrian National Library, the Book of the Dead of Sesostris from the 15th century BC. The museum also features fragments of ancient Greek literature, including works by Homer and Xenophon. The exhibits illustrate changing languages and scripts, offering insights into daily life, religion, and administration in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The museum's modern presentation includes multimedia stations and bilingual information in English and German.The collection originated with Archduke Rainer, who acquired the majority of the items in the late 19th century and gifted them to Emperor Franz Joseph I.
