Vienna Clock Museum: A Journey Through Time

Located in the historic Palais Obizzi, dating back to 1690, the Vienna Clock Museum (Wiener Uhrenmuseum) invites visitors to embark on a journey through the history of timekeeping. Founded in 1917, the museum's collection originated from the private collections of Rudolf Kaftan and Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. Today, it stands as Austria's largest clock collection and one of the most significant in Europe. The museum showcases over 700 exhibits from around the world, illustrating the evolution of time measurement from the Middle Ages to the present day. Highlights include timepieces dating back to the 15th century, showcasing the ingenuity of early clockmakers. The collection also features an 18th-century astronomical clock by David a Sancto Cajetano, which displays planetary positions, lunar phases, and zodiac signs. The tower clock of St. Stephen's Cathedral, originally installed in 1699, is another prominent exhibit. Visitors can explore a variety of timekeeping devices, including pocket watches, cuckoo clocks, sundials, and hourglasses. The museum not only highlights scientific progress and technical precision but also documents the history of arts and crafts, shedding light on social changes throughout history. At the top of each hour, the museum comes alive with a symphony of chimes as the clocks strike in unison. For a unique and interactive experience, visitors can participate in the “AR Escape Game,” which blends historical storytelling with augmented reality to solve puzzles and explore clock mechanisms.
