Wien Museum Prater Museum: A Celebration of Viennese Amusement

The Wien Museum Prater Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the captivating history of Vienna's Prater amusement park. For over 250 years, the Prater has been a place of entertainment, recreation, and social gathering for the Viennese people. Opened to the public in 1766 by Emperor Joseph II, the Wurstelprater has evolved through many iterations, surviving near-total destruction in 1945 to remain a vibrant landmark. The museum's collection began with the efforts of local historian Hans Pemmer, who amassed thousands of objects related to the Prater's history. These include original artifacts, documentary materials, and memorabilia, offering insight into the development of the Wurstelprater funfair, the Prater's green spaces, and its role as a venue for sports, exhibitions, and events. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring merry-go-round figures, Punch and Judy puppets, early slot machines, plans, models, photos, and posters. The museum also highlights the Prater's role in popular culture, including its exotic animals, depictions of the human body, and appearances in films like 'The Third Man'. A highlight is the monumental panoramic picture in the foyer, populated with 700 people and 100 animals that have shaped Vienna and the Prater. The Prater Museum moved to a new, purpose-built location in 2024, a sustainable timber building in the heart of the Wurstelprater. This new space allows for expanded exhibits and a more immersive experience, ensuring that the Prater's legacy continues to delight and inform visitors for generations to come.
