Discover more about Wasserturm Favoriten

Rising proudly on the Wienerberg hill, the Wasserturm Favoriten is a remarkable example of industrial architecture transformed into a cultural and recreational space. Constructed between 1898 and 1899 by Franz Borkowitz, the tower was part of a complex designed to supply drinking water to the higher-lying areas of Vienna's 10th and 12th districts, as the existing First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline couldn't provide sufficient pressure. Designed in the style of industrial historicism, the Wasserturm resembles a romantic castle with its stone block masonry and intricate details. The 67-meter-tall tower comprises two cylindrical pillars, one inside the other, with the inner pillar holding the main water reservoir. Inside, a 203-meter-long spiral ramp winds its way up to a viewing platform 48 meters above ground, offering panoramic views of Vienna. After the Second Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline opened in 1910, the Wasserturm was only used occasionally. By 1956, it was no longer used for water supply. The city recognized its historical and architectural significance, and it underwent extensive renovations from 1988 to 1990. Today, the Wasserturm Favoriten is a protected monument and cultural venue hosting exhibitions and events, often focusing on water. The surrounding park offers recreational opportunities, including the Wasserspielplatz Wasserturm, a water playground that provides a refreshing escape during the warmer months. The park also features a volleyball court, outdoor fitness equipment, and green space for relaxation. Visiting the Wasserturm Favoriten offers a unique opportunity to connect with Vienna's history, appreciate its architecture, and enjoy the beauty of its surroundings.
