The O’Brien Monument (O’Brien-Denkmal) stands in Vienna's 21st district, Floridsdorf, honoring Generalmajor Johann Freiherr von O’Brien and his troops during the Napoleonic Wars. The monument marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Aspern-Essling and the defense of Schwarzlackenau. In this battle, O’Brien played a key role in preventing Napoleon's forces from crossing the Danube River. The monument is on the northern edge of Aupark, near Überfuhrstraße, in the Schwarzen Lackenau area, close to Jedlesee. This location marks where Austrian forces, led by O’Brien, successfully stopped the French from establishing a bridgehead on May 13, 1809. This victory delayed Napoleon's crossing and allowed the Austrian army to prepare for the Battle of Aspern-Essling. The monument features a stepped base supporting a five-meter-high obelisk. A bronze eagle with outstretched wings and an orb sits atop the obelisk. The front of the obelisk has a bronze portrait relief of Johann Freiherr von O’Brien, surrounded by laurel branches. Bronze medallions on the sides bear inscriptions. The monument has been renovated several times, including in 1932 and 1959.
