The Donauweibchen Fountain, gracefully situated within Vienna's Stadtpark, is a captivating blend of mythology, art, and history. Created by Hanns Gasser and commissioned by the city of Vienna in 1858, the fountain depicts the Donauweibchen, a kind-hearted water spirit who, according to local tales, helped fishermen in need and warned them of impending floods.The fountain features a karst limestone column adorned with four round basins and gargoyle-like masks that serve as waterspouts. Atop the column stands the statue of the Donauweibchen herself, reminiscent of ancient Greek Venus statues. The statue is a stone copy created in 1948 by sculptor Fellinger, replacing the original Carrara marble statue that was severely damaged during World War II. The original is now held by the Wien Museum.Unveiled in 1865, the Donauweibchen Fountain was the first figurative decoration in the Stadtpark. Unlike many other monumental fountains in Vienna, the Donauweibchenbrunnen dispenses potable drinking water. The gentle sound of the water creates a soothing ambiance, enhancing the park's tranquil atmosphere.
