Discover more about Prater

Vienna's Prater is more than just an amusement park; it's a vibrant destination that combines thrilling rides with tranquil green spaces. Its history dates back to the 16th century when it served as an imperial hunting ground for the Habsburgs. In 1766, Emperor Joseph II opened the Prater to the public, marking its transformation into a recreational area for all. The Wurstelprater, the amusement park area, officially came into being in 1766. Over the years, it evolved into a bustling zone with swings, bowling alleys, cabarets, and puppet theaters. The iconic Wiener Riesenrad (Giant Ferris Wheel) was erected in 1897, solidifying the Prater's reputation as a center for entertainment. Today, the Prater features over 250 attractions, including roller coasters, carousels, and haunted houses. Beyond the Wurstelprater lies the "Green Prater," a vast natural landscape with meadows, forests, and river paths along the Danube. This area offers a peaceful escape from the city, perfect for walking, running, cycling, or simply relaxing. The Prater Hauptallee, a 4.5 km long main avenue lined with 2,500 chestnut trees, is a popular spot for strolling. The Prater has faced its share of challenges throughout history. It was bombed and burnt down during World War II, but was reconstructed after 1945. Today, it stands as a symbol of Vienna's resilience and charm. The Prater continues to evolve, offering a blend of nostalgia and modern entertainment for visitors of all ages.
