Discover more about Hundertwasser House

The Hundertwasser House, located in Vienna's Landstraße district, stands as a testament to architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser's vision of architecture in harmony with nature. Completed in 1985, the building breaks away from architectural norms with its colorful, puzzle-like facade, undulating floors, and over 200 trees and shrubs growing from its balconies and roof terraces. Hundertwasser, whose birth name was Friedrich Stowasser, was a painter, sculptor, and architect known for his fervent environmentalism. He believed that there are no straight lines in nature, a philosophy reflected in the building's design. Working with architects Josef Krawina and Peter Pelikan, Hundertwasser created a building where tenants have the right to decorate the facade around their windows to their own taste, contributing to the building's unique character. While the apartments themselves are not open to the public as they are private residences, visitors can admire the building's exterior. Opposite the Hundertwasser House is the Hundertwasser Village, a shopping center created by Hundertwasser in the style of a 'romantic, narrow, oriental bazaar'. A short walk away is the Kunst Haus Wien, another Hundertwasser-designed building that houses a museum dedicated to his work.
