Nepomuk Chapel: A Baroque Jewel in Bregenz

Nestled on Kaspar-Moosbrugger-Platz in Bregenz, the Nepomuk Chapel is a stunning example of baroque architecture. This small, circular chapel, crowned with a distinctive dome and lantern, provides a peaceful retreat from the surrounding city.The chapel's origins date back to 1757 when it was commissioned by theologian Franz Wilhelm Haas. Legend says that Haas narrowly avoided drowning in Lake Constance, which once extended to the Kornmarkt. In gratitude for his rescue, he vowed to construct a chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges, water hazards, and those in peril of water. The blueprints are believed to be designed by Johann Michael Beer from Bildstein.The chapel's architecture exemplifies the baroque style, with ornate details and a dramatic flair. The exterior features a continuous base, shallow wall pilasters, and arched windows. A sandstone statue of St. Nepomuk watches over the city above the arched portal. The structure is topped with a curved shallow dome, a lantern, and an onion dome.Inside, the chapel's circular layout creates an intimate and reverent atmosphere. The restored baroque central building houses a richly decorated high altar, serving as the focal point of the space. The interior is adorned with rococo-style paintings and intricate plasterwork, showcasing the artistic talent of the era. Light filters through the windows, illuminating the ornate details and creating a serene ambiance.The Nepomuk Chapel has undergone several restorations throughout its history, most recently between 1995 and 1997, ensuring that its architectural and artistic elements are preserved for future generations.
