    Schattenburg Castle, perched high above the town of Feldkirch in Vorarlberg, Austria, is a captivating journey into the medieval past. Constructed around 1200 by Count Hugo I of Montfort, the castle served as the residence for the Dukes of Montfort until it was sold to the Habsburgs in 1390. The name Schattenburg is believed to be derived from the German word 'schatten', meaning protection or shield.Over the centuries, Schattenburg has been involved in several wars, suffering damage and undergoing constant renovations. It was occupied by Swedish troops in 1647 during the Thirty Years' War. In the 18th century, it served as military barracks and a poorhouse before being acquired by the city of Feldkirch in 1825. Today, Schattenburg stands as one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Central Europe.The Schattenburg Museum, located within the castle, features eighteen rooms on three floors, each dedicated to a different aspect of Feldkirch's city history. Visitors can explore collections of historical weapons, locks, and other traditional objects. The castle also houses a restaurant where visitors can enjoy traditional cuisine. Public guided tours are available every Wednesday evening from May to October, and individual tours can be arranged by appointment.
