Getting There

    From the center of Shamakhy, the castle ruins are located approximately 2 km to the west, in the vicinity of Khinishli village. Start walking west, following the main road towards Khinishli. The walk is uphill and takes around 30-45 minutes. Look for signs directing you to the 'Gulustan Fortress' or 'Shamakhy Castle Ruins'. The path is relatively smooth but can be steep in sections. No costs are associated with walking to the site.

The Shamakhy Castle Ruins, also known as Gulustan Fortress, offer a captivating journey into Azerbaijan's medieval past. Located a short distance from the city of Shamakhy, the ruins are perched atop a steep hill, providing commanding views of the surrounding countryside. This strategic location made it a crucial defensive site for centuries, particularly during the reign of the Shirvanshahs. Originally constructed in the 9th century, Gulustan Fortress underwent significant rebuilding and strengthening in the 12th and 13th centuries. It served as both a refuge and a secondary residence for the Shirvanshahs, the rulers of Shirvan, after Shamakhy. The fortress played a vital role in protecting the city and the surrounding lands from invaders, including the Seljuks, Mongols, and other rival powers. Its imposing walls, towers, and citadel were designed to withstand prolonged sieges and provide a safe haven for the local population. Throughout its history, the fortress witnessed numerous battles and sieges. It was mentioned in historical texts by Khaqani, Arif Ardabili, and others, highlighting its significance as a strategic stronghold. The fortress was also equipped with an underground passage, providing a secret escape route during times of crisis. This passage, approximately 1 kilometer long, is said to still exist, though exploring it requires a local guide. In 1547, the fortress suffered significant damage during a rebellion led by Alqas Mirza. The Safavid army laid siege to the fortress for three months, eventually breaching its walls. The fortress was subsequently destroyed on the orders of Shah Tahmasp I. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of Gulustan Fortress, which include fragments of the defensive walls, round and quadrangular towers, and the citadel. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the remains of palace complex buildings and artifacts dating back to the 9th-12th centuries. The climb to the top of the hill can be challenging, but the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape are well worth the effort. From the summit, visitors can appreciate the strategic importance of the fortress and imagine the battles that were fought on its grounds.
