Dilmun Burial Mounds: Echoes of an Ancient Civilization

The Dilmun Burial Mounds stand as silent witnesses to the ancient Dilmun civilization that flourished in Bahrain during the Bronze Age. Constructed between 2200 and 1750 BCE, these mounds number over 11,774 and are clustered in 21 archaeological sites across the western part of the island. These burial sites provide invaluable insights into the beliefs, customs, and social structures of the Dilmun people.Each mound typically consists of a central stone chamber enclosed by a low ring-wall and covered with earth and gravel. The size and complexity of the mounds reflect the social status of the individuals interred within. Royal tombs, reaching up to 12 meters in height, were constructed as fortified towers, while ordinary tombs are simpler mounds of dirt. Artifacts discovered within the mounds, including pottery, jewelry, and tools, are displayed in museums in Bahrain and beyond.Visiting the Dilmun Burial Mounds offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the oldest and most important archaeological sites in the Gulf region. Walking among the mounds, visitors can observe their size, structure, and layout, and reflect on the cultural and historical significance of the site. The largest concentration of mounds can be found in A'ali village, where some have exposed interiors. The site is open to the public and there is no admission fee.
