Discover more about Rabindranath Tagore Ancestor Residents and Rabindra Memorial Collection

The Rabindranath Tagore Ancestor Residents and Rabindra Memorial Collection stands as a significant cultural and historical site in Khulna, Bangladesh, offering a glimpse into the origins and legacy of the Tagore family, particularly its connection to the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The Tagore family, originally known as Kushari, traces its roots back to the Burdwan district of West Bengal. In the 16th century, Jagannath Kushari, an ancestor of the Tagores, migrated to Dakshindihi in Khulna. For approximately 200 years, the Kushari family flourished in Dakshindihi, contributing to the region's social and cultural landscape. Rabindranath Tagore's personal connection to the region is further strengthened by the fact that his paternal grandmother, Digambari Devi, his mother, Sarada Sundari Devi, and his paternal aunt by marriage, Tripura Sundari Devi, all hailed from Dakshindihi. Moreover, Tagore's wife, Bhabatarini Devi (also known as Mrinalini Devi), also had roots in Dakshindihi, making the village an integral part of the Tagore family's history. The memorial complex is housed in the former residence of Beni Madhab Roy Chowdhury, Tagore's father-in-law, which has been transformed into the Dakshindihi Rabindra Complex.
