Discover more about Rupban Mura

Rupban Mura, situated in Kotbari, Cumilla, Bangladesh, is an archaeological treasure that provides a glimpse into ancient Bengal's vibrant Buddhist past. The site dates back to the 6th to 12th centuries CE, during the Chandra and Deva dynasties, who were instrumental in spreading Buddhism in the region. Excavations have revealed a cruciform shrine, a monastery, and an octagonal votive stupa. The cruciform shrine, initially a solid stupa on a square base, was transformed into a semi-cruciform shrine in the 8th century AD. Uniquely, the eastern side of the shrine features a group of three long, narrow chapels. A colossal stone Buddha, now housed in the Mainamati Museum, was discovered in the middle chapel. The monastery, originally with 24 cells in four wings, was later reduced to 18 cells during the second period. The southern wing was abandoned due to damage, and new cells were built in front, giving the monastery an oblong shape. The architecture reflects Gupta and Pala influences, with intricate carvings and sculptures. Terracotta plaques and stone carvings depict Buddhist deities and motifs, showcasing the artistic skills of the time. Rupban Mura served as a significant center for Buddhist learning and practice, attracting pilgrims and fostering religious and educational activities. Today, the site attracts visitors worldwide with its historical significance and architectural beauty. Well-maintained pathways and informative signage enhance the visitor experience.
