Nazrul Institute Centre, Cumilla: A Tribute to the Rebel Poet

The Nazrul Institute Centre in Cumilla serves as a reminder of the deep connection between Kazi Nazrul Islam and the city. Kazi Nazrul Islam, the 'rebel poet,' spent a significant period of his life in Cumilla, profoundly influencing his creative work. He stayed in Cumilla for approximately 11 months across five visits between April 1921 and January 1924. During this time, he formed close relationships and found inspiration in the local culture and environment. The river Gomati, flowing through Cumilla, and the relationships he forged with two women, Pramila and Nargis, became central themes in his poetry and songs. The Nazrul Institute Centre was inaugurated on April 20, 2013, by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as a tribute to Nazrul's legacy. The center aims to promote the study of Nazrul's works, preserve his memory, and disseminate his ideology of equality, humanity, and rebellion against injustice. It serves as a cultural and educational hub, attracting scholars, students, and enthusiasts from across Bangladesh and beyond. Visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere that encourages reflection and contemplation. The institute houses a museum showcasing a rich collection of Nazrul's personal belongings, manuscripts, photographs, and other memorabilia. These exhibits provide a glimpse into his life and times.
