Nafakhum Waterfall: The Niagara of Bangladesh
Discover Nafakhum Waterfall: Bangladesh's hidden gem, offering a thrilling adventure through stunning natural landscapes and indigenous culture.
Nafakhum Waterfall is one of Bangladesh's largest waterfalls by water volume, situated in the Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban, a hilly district in the Chittagong Division. The waterfall is located roughly 79 kilometers south of Bandarban town. The word 'Nafa' comes from the Marma or Bawm language, meaning “fish that cannot swim,” while 'Khum' means waterfall. The name originates from a unique fish species that cannot swim past the falls, gathering at its base. The waterfall features water falling from a height of 25 to 30 feet into a rocky basin, creating a breathtaking scene. The impact of the water forms a natural pool known as the “Khum Pond”. The surrounding area is enriched with dense forests, wild trees, and rocky hills, enhancing the overall scenic beauty. The best time to visit Nafakhum is between September and November, after the rainy season and before winter, when the weather is favorable and the river's water level is manageable. Historically, the area around Nafakhum has been home to indigenous communities for centuries, with tourism opening up in the 1990s. The journey to Nafakhum includes a boat ride on the Sangu River from Thanchi to Remakri, followed by a trek through hilly trails. Along the way, travelers pass through Tindu and Boro Pathor, experiencing the stunning landscapes of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
