Kuakata Sea Beach, an 18-kilometer sandy expanse, offers a unique and mesmerizing experience as one of the few places where you can witness both the sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal. Locally known as 'Sagor Kannya' (Daughter of the Sea), this beach is located on the southernmost tip of Bangladesh, in the Patuakhali district. The name Kuakata originates from the Bengali word 'Kua' (well), dug by early Rakhine settlers who arrived in the late 18th century after being expelled from Arakan (Myanmar). These settlers dug wells to solve their drinking water shortage, and the tradition continued, shaping the area's history and culture. The Rakhine community's traditions and temples add cultural richness to the area, attracting curious travelers. Kuakata is also a pilgrimage site for Hindu and Buddhist communities, with devotees gathering for holy baths and traditional fairs during festivals like 'Rush Purnima' and 'Maghi Purnima'. You can also visit a 100-year-old Buddhist temple that houses a statue of Gautama Buddha and two 200-year-old wells. Beyond the beach, Kuakata offers diverse attractions. Explore the Gangamati Reserved Forest, an evergreen mangrove forest on the beach's eastern end, or visit Kuakata National Park, home to various plant and animal species. The best way to reach the forest is by foot or bike along the beach. Don't miss the chance to visit Rakhine Palli and see the Rakhine looms and textiles. While in Kuakata, be sure to respect the local culture and traditions.
