Discover more about Christ Church Parish Church

Christ Church Parish Church, located on Church Hill in Oistins, is more than a place of worship; it's a testament to Barbadian history and resilience. Overlooking Oistins Bay, this Anglican church has become a landmark, drawing visitors with its architecture and serene atmosphere. The story of Christ Church Parish Church is one of repeated destruction and reconstruction. The first church, a wooden structure, was built around 1629 near Dover Beach. A flood in 1669 swept it away, scattering coffins and bones. The parish rebuilt on Church Hill, but the second church was destroyed by the Great Hurricane of 1780. A third church, constructed in 1786, met a similar fate in the hurricane of 1831. In 1835, the cornerstone for another church was laid, only for it to be ravaged by fire in 1935. The current Christ Church Parish Church, consecrated in 1935, incorporates three walls and the west tower from its predecessor. The architecture includes coral stone walls, woodwork, and stained-glass windows. The churchyard is home to the Chase Vault, a burial chamber that has captured imaginations for generations. The coffins of the Chase family were said to mysteriously rearrange themselves within the sealed vault. This led to investigations and the decision to bury the coffins separately. Today, visitors can see the Chase Vault. Visitors can attend services or explore the churchyard. The church offers a glimpse into Barbados' colonial past, with gravesites and memorial ledgers.
