Tyrol Cot Heritage Village: A Step Back in Time

Tyrol Cot Heritage Village, situated on Spooners Hill, St. Michael, provides a unique opportunity to experience Barbados' rich heritage. The centerpiece is the Tyrol Cot house, built in 1854 by William Farnum, showcasing a blend of Palladian and tropical vernacular architecture. The house was home to Sir Grantley Adams, a pivotal figure in Barbadian and West Indian history, and his son Tom Adams, who also became Prime Minister of Barbados.The house has been carefully restored by the Barbados National Trust, filled with the Adams' antique furniture, books, and memorabilia, offering a glimpse into their lives and times. The hallway features a cupola providing light and a view of Bridgetown.Adjacent to the main house is the Heritage Village, featuring replicas of traditional chattel houses, each showcasing different eras of Barbadian life and traditional crafts. Visitors can witness artisans at work, creating basketry, leather goods, and pottery. The village also includes a blacksmith shop and a replica of a 1920s shingled house furnished in the style of that era. A replica of an 1820s slave hut offers a glimpse into the lives of enslaved people in Barbados.The grounds are meticulously maintained, with gardens planted in the style of the 1930s, featuring roses, ferns, and bougainvilleas. A traditional rum shop offers local fare such as fishcakes and rum. Tyrol Cot hosts events, workshops, and performances throughout the year.
