Discover more about George Washington House

George Washington House, nestled in the Garrison Historic Area of Bridgetown, Barbados, offers a unique journey into the past. This stately Georgian-style residence is significant as the only house outside the United States where George Washington resided. In 1751, a 19-year-old George Washington accompanied his half-brother Lawrence to Barbados, hoping the warm climate would alleviate Lawrence's tuberculosis. During their stay, Washington lived in this house for two months, an experience that profoundly impacted him. He was exposed to Barbados's sophisticated military defenses, diverse culture, and thriving plantation economy. The house has been meticulously restored to reflect 18th-century colonial life, with period furnishings and exhibits that bring the era to life. Visitors can explore the ground floor, furnished as it might have been during Washington's stay, and the second floor, which features a museum with artifacts and exhibits detailing 18th-century Barbadian life. A highlight is the access to a section of the Garrison Tunnels, an extensive network constructed around 1820 beneath the Garrison Historic Area. These tunnels offer a glimpse into a hidden part of Barbadian history. The site also includes a café and gift shop, making the historical adventure convenient and enjoyable.
