Beguinage Antwerp: A Tranquil Historical Oasis

Discover the serene Beguinage of Antwerp, a UNESCO World Heritage site offering a peaceful escape into the city's rich history and unique architecture.

4.5

The Beguinage of Antwerp, located at Rodestraat 39, is a captivating step back in time. Founded around 1240, it provided a sanctuary for Beguines, religious women who dedicated their lives to prayer and service without adhering to strict monastic rules. Unlike nuns, Beguines were free to leave the community at any time. Originally situated outside the city walls, the Beguinage was moved within the city limits due to frequent attacks. The complex was rebuilt in the 16th century, acquiring its present form, and features a small church completed in 1547. Despite facing challenges such as occupation by reformists and desecration during the French Revolution, the Beguinage was restored and continued to house Beguines until 1986 when the last Beguine of Antwerp, Virginie Laeremans, passed away. Today, the Beguinage is a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering visitors a tranquil escape from the city. Enclosed within tall brick walls, the complex features picturesque brick houses, a Baroque entrance, and a serene courtyard centered around St. Catherine's Church. Visitors can explore the cobblestone paths, admire the architecture, and immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere. The Beguinage stands as a testament to Antwerp's rich history and the remarkable women who once called it home.
