Discover more about Botanical Garden

Step into a world of tranquility at the Botanical Garden (Kruidtuin) in Leuven, a historical gem dating back to 1738. Founded by the University of Leuven as a medicinal herb garden for its medical students, the garden has since transformed into a vibrant green space open to all. As you wander through the 2.2-hectare garden, you'll discover a diverse collection of over 8,000 plant species. The garden features various sections, including a medicinal herb garden, a rock garden, an apiary, and a large greenhouse complex spanning 450 m². The greenhouse shelters herbaceous, medicinal, aquatic, and potted plants, alongside a variety of tropical and subtropical species. The garden's history is as rich as its flora. Originally intended for university students, it opened its gates to the public in 1738. During the French revolutionary occupation, the garden was seized by the state in 1797 but was later restored under Dutch rule in 1817. In 1835, the garden's ownership was officially transferred from the university to the city of Leuven, solidifying its status as a public park. Today, the Botanical Garden serves as both a scientific resource and a recreational haven. It's a place where botany enthusiasts can explore diverse plant collections, and anyone can enjoy a peaceful escape from the city bustle. Exhibitions are regularly held in the orangery, the gatehouse, and the open air, adding an artistic dimension to the natural beauty. Don't miss the "Sunken garden" and feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy amidst the greenery.
