Discover more about The oldest house of Antwerp

The Oldest House of Antwerp, situated on Stoelstraat 11, stands as a remarkable testament to the city's rich architectural heritage. Built around 1500, this 'driekwartshuis' (three-quarter house) is the only original wooden house in Antwerp that has withstood the test of time, surviving six wars. In the 16th century, most houses in Antwerp's city center were constructed of wood. However, due to the risk of fires, the city decided to build houses in stone from 1546 onwards. Today, the Oldest House remains a unique example of the architecture prevalent before this shift. While often described as dating back to 1546, the original house was demolished in 1973 and rebuilt in 1973-1974. The reconstruction was designed by architect Jos Gabriëls. Although rebuilt, it retains the charm and character of the original structure. The house features a wooden gable with three overlapping sections, adorned with trefoil bargeboards. The facade has an openwork design with a post-and-beam structure. Today, the house can be rented for short stays, offering a unique experience to groups of up to 12 people.
