Discover more about Hendrik Conscience - Frans Joris

Hendrik Conscienceplein is a captivating historical landmark in Antwerp, Belgium, named in 1883 for Hendrik Conscience, a 19th-century Flemish writer whose statue graces the square. Previously known as Jezuïetenplein, the square's architecture reflects a conscious effort by the Jesuits to inspire and attract people to the church during the Counter-Reformation. The square is surrounded by buildings showcasing Baroque styles, most notably the St. Carolus Borromeo Church, a former Jesuit church known for its ornate design. The Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library, housed in the former Sodaliteit building since 1883, adds to the square's literary and historical significance. The library's collection has grown from 41 books in 1481 to become one of Flanders' most important heritage libraries. In 1972, Hendrik Conscienceplein became Antwerp's first car-free square, following an artistic intervention by VAGA in 1968. The redesign, led by architect Dries Jageneau, features a chessboard pattern with squares filled in unique designs by the pavers. Today, visitors can enjoy the square's peaceful atmosphere, explore the library, admire the architecture, and relax at nearby cafes.
