Noordkasteel, located in Antwerp, is a fascinating site where history and nature converge. Originally constructed between 1862 and 1864 as a citadel to defend the city, the fort played a crucial role in protecting Antwerp from attacks along the Scheldt River. However, its lifespan as a military stronghold was short-lived; parts of it were demolished as early as 1881 to accommodate the expanding Port of Antwerp.In 1934, Noordkasteel was repurposed into a recreational area, complete with an outdoor swimming pool and a rowing pond, becoming a popular destination until 1969. Today, it serves as a green oasis amidst the bustling port, offering walking and cycling paths, and a tranquil lake. The south side of the lake features a bar with a relaxed, bohemian vibe, while the north side sometimes hosts weekend parties.Visitors can still find remnants of the fort, including parts of the ramparts and a hidden World War I bunker, adding an intriguing historical layer to the site. Although swimming is generally prohibited, the lakeside remains a popular spot for relaxation and enjoying the scenery.
