Discover more about Sint-Nicolaas Square

Sint-Nicolaas Square, or St Nicolaasplaats, is a delightful square tucked away in Antwerp, Belgium. Its history stretches back to 1422 when the Falconinnen sisters established a God house here. This house served the craftsmen of the Meerseniers guild, including shoemakers, tailors, tinsmiths, and grocers, providing care for their needy, elderly, and sick members. The square's chapel, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the Meerseniers, was built in 1423. Although the chapel closed in 1876 and was later used for storage and as a puppet theater, the entire complex was renovated between 1958 and 1968 by architect F. Van Averbeke. Today, Sint-Nicolaas Square is a cultural hub, mainly used by local theater groups. Visitors can admire the statue of Saint Nicholas in the square's center and appreciate the historical buildings surrounding it. The square offers a peaceful escape from the city's bustle and a chance to discover a hidden gem with significant cultural value.
