Getting there

Walking

From the center of Rochehaut, follow the signs for 'Balade des Échelles' or route number 43. The trail starts near the viewpoint overlooking Frahan. Follow the marked path downhill, passing through the village and into the forest. The ladders are located along the cliff faces as you descend into the Semois valley. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and allow 2-3 hours to complete the loop.

Public Transport

From Bouillon, take the TEC bus line 45 to Rochehaut. The bus ride takes approximately 32 minutes and costs €2-€3. Get off at the Rochehaut Eglise or Rochehaut Le Routy stop, which are both within walking distance of the trail. From the bus stop, follow the signs to the viewpoint and the start of the Balade des Échelles.

Parking

Several parking options are available in Rochehaut. You can park near the viewpoint of Frahan or behind the church. Parking is free, but it can get crowded during peak season, so arrive early. From the parking areas, follow the signs to the start of the Balade des Échelles.

The Balade des Échelles, or Ladder Hike, is a unique and exhilarating experience nestled in the Ardennes region of Belgium, near the village of Rochehaut. This 5-6 km hike is not for the faint of heart, as it involves navigating steep terrain with the aid of ladders attached to near-vertical rock faces.The trail begins in Rochehaut, near the viewpoint overlooking the Semois River. The path is well-marked with red rectangle number 43. As you descend into the Semois Valley, prepare for varied landscapes, including dense forests and rocky paths. The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly the series of ladders that allow you to ascend and descend the cliffs, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Semois River and the surrounding valley.After conquering the ladders, the trail leads back up through wooded paths towards Rochehaut. This section provides a chance to reflect on the adventure and enjoy the natural beauty of the Ardennes. The Balade des Échelles was created after World War II by former mayor Monsieur Bathélémy in the 1950s.
