Discover more about Musée Archéologique

The Musée Archéologique d'Arlon, established in 1934, is a must-visit for history and culture enthusiasts. It houses an exceptional collection of Gallo-Roman relics unearthed in the province of Luxembourg, providing invaluable insights into the daily lives of people from that era. Arlon, strategically located at the crossroads of two major Roman roads (Reims-Trier and Metz-Tongres), thrived during the early centuries of our era through trade with neighboring regions and as far as the Mediterranean. The settlement, known as Orolaunum vicus, was part of the territory of the Treveri. The museum's remarkable and extensive lapidary collection stands out, featuring numerous fragments of ancient funerary monuments. The sculptures' excellent preservation is attributed to their reuse in the foundations of the rampart built to protect Orolaunum vicus from invasions in late antiquity. Visitors can also explore a diverse range of archaeological materials discovered in recent years, including ceramics, jewelry, coins, and tools. A visit to the Musée Archéologique d'Arlon offers the chance to wander through the sculpture gallery and admire scenes depicting the idealized self-image that wealthy Gallo-Romans wished to leave behind on their funerary monuments. You can encounter the gods and goddesses who influenced the lives of our ancestors and gain insight into their beliefs and customs. Marvel at the craftsmanship of ancient artisans, including stonemasons, potters, metallurgists, and glassmakers, and trace trade routes and exchanges with other regions of the Roman Empire.
