Discover more about Wenduine Spioenkop

The Spioenkop, loosely translated as "hill from which one can spy," has a rich history as a strategic observation point dating back to 1770. Military messages were transmitted from here, and in the 19th century, Belgian customs used it to prevent smuggling. In 1902, the first dune pavilion was built to shelter tourists enjoying the panoramic views. The current pavilion, dating back to 1955, is the third iteration, as the previous two were destroyed during the World Wars. The name "Spioenkop" commemorates the victory of the Boers over the British in the Battle of Spioenkop in South Africa in 1900. Today, the Spioenkop remains a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers. At the foot of the dune lies De Rotonde, a cozy spot for sunbathing and recreation. Accessible via walking paths and a staircase, the Spioenkop offers a unique blend of nature, history, and relaxation.
