    Discover more about Book Tower

The Book Tower (Boekentoren) is an iconic building in Ghent, designed by the renowned Belgian architect Henry van de Velde. Constructed between 1936 and 1942, it stands as a testament to modernist architecture and a symbol of knowledge. As part of the Ghent University Library, it houses over 3 million books, manuscripts, and other materials. Rising 64 meters (210 feet) high, the Book Tower is also known as the "Tower of Wisdom," fulfilling Ghent's ambition to create a "Parade of Towers". Its design combines vertical lines of the tower and bookshelves with horizontal elements like open books and reading rooms. The building has twenty floors above ground and four below, providing space for about 46 kilometers of printed material. The tower's shape, a Greek cross, symbolizes the convergence of time and space, merging the earthly and celestial. A bronze fox terrier sculpture sits atop the Book Tower, a work by Greta van Puyenbroeck, adding a touch of whimsy to the structure. Visitors can explore the library spaces during opening hours and enjoy panoramic views of Ghent from the upper levels.
