Discover more about Pont de Jambes

The Pont de Jambes gracefully arches over the Meuse River, weaving together centuries of history and architectural evolution. The bridge has played a significant role during various military campaigns, including the Siege of Namur in 1692. Originally constructed possibly as far back as the Roman era, the bridge has been rebuilt and modified several times. The current form dates back to the 16th to 18th centuries. It has seven arches, with the central arch being wider to allow the passage of fluvial convoys. Legends abound about the bridge, including tales of hidden treasures buried beneath its arches. Locals believe that during the Spanish occupation, a wealthy merchant hid his fortune there, sparking the imaginations of treasure hunters for generations. During the First World War, in the summer of 1914, the Belgian army blew up three arches from the bridge hoping to stop or slow down the rapid advance of the German troops. The bridge offers breathtaking views of Namur's skyline, especially when the sun sets. The area around the bridge is adorned with charming cafes and parks. Crossing this majestic bridge, seemingly invincible in front of the Citadel, continues to fascinate.
