Discover more about cave of Lorette-Rochefort

The Cave of Lorette-Rochefort, often called the 'little sister' to the Cave of Han, offers a captivating journey into the underground. Located just 300 meters from the center of Rochefort, this natural wonder invites visitors to explore its depths and discover the secrets hidden within. Officially discovered in 1865 by Alphonse Collignon, the cave has been open to the public since 1870. Carved by the Lomme River over millennia, the cave is notable for its vertical structure, setting it apart from many other caves in Belgium. The guided tour takes you through a maze of galleries and chambers, leading to the spectacular 'Salle du Sabbat' (Sabbath Chamber), 60 meters below ground. Here, the guide launches a small, illuminated hot air balloon during a sound and light show to emphasize the chamber's impressive height. The cave also houses the Val d'Enfer research laboratory, where scientists monitor tectonic activity and other phenomena. Before descending into the depths, visitors can view 'Vidéokarst', a film explaining tectonic phenomena. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius year-round and provides shelter for bats, insects, and spiders.
